BLUE ENTRANCE

Close encounters
Sharks, Penguins, Trigons and Jellyfish are just some of the many protagonists of this exciting path. The blue entrance is an immersion in the history and biological evolution of the planet: some tanks host species still surviving after millions of years, such as the great sharks considered living fossils. It is a journey around the world but under the surface of the water! From the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans to the splendid and colorful coral reef of the Red Sea, populated by colorful organisms. All the tanks of the Aquarium reveal wonders! The smaller ones recreate different ecosystems, rich in life and mystery. The Aquarium becomes not only a fascinating place, but an environment of observation and knowledge that allows man a greater contact with the marine world.

Shark tank
The protagonists of the Cattolica Aquarium are the Sharks that can be admired in the large central tank of 700,000 liters of water where bull sharks and nurse sharks live together.
The relationship between man and Condritti has always been balanced despite competition and fear. However, in recent decades many species have been classified at risk due to the increase in the human population, the technological development of fishing and navigation, and environmental degradation.
The characteristics that have allowed sharks to adapt to the evolution of planet earth are the same that make them vulnerable to the negative effects of human action.

Penguins
Species at risk due to their threatened habitat, the Humboldt penguin species originates from the temperate coasts of Peru and Chile, where temperatures vary between –3 ° C to +24 ° C. The adult specimens reach 60 Cm in height and 5 Kg in weight and can live up to 20 years. They feed mainly on molluscs, sardines and Krill, which hunt within 30 m of depth and always remain in groups.
Sexual maturity occurs between 2 and 7 years and usually form a fixed pair throughout life. They normally lay 2 eggs which are hatched for 42 days by both individuals.
Aloo, Keema, Chapatti, Masala, Bahji, Tikka, Rogan, Josh, Lalla, Babba, Smoking and Yuki, the Humboldt penguins of the Aquarium, come from structures that deal with safeguarding and conservation. They can be recognized from each other by a colored ring.

Jellyfish
Jellyfish, mysterious and fascinating organisms that none of us would ever want to meet if not visiting an aquarium, are 90% made of water and have a parachute-shaped body that reaches 40 cm in diameter and a series of stinging tentacles with who catch their prey. In the first four portholes you can follow the life cycle of the Four Leaf Clover Medusa, very common in the Mediterranean. This jellyfish has a soft, gelatinous cup-shaped umbrella, the edge of which appears frayed due to the presence of numerous and short hollow tentacles.
In the last porthole the jellyfish Cassiopeia andromeda, which lives resting on the sandy bottoms of the sea depths and wanders silent without being able to defend itself, because it has no stinging tentacles.

The tactile tub
The Touchpool, or tactile tank, houses several organisms of which the largest are the Trigoni or Dasyatis violacea - so called for their brown-violet coloring tending to black - which can reach a width of 80 cm and a maximum length of 190 cm. The stingrays also live in the Adriatic Sea, feed on jellyfish, squid, crustaceans and fish and, like their relatives sharks, have a cartilaginous skeleton.
Some stingrays housed in the tank were born in the Cattolica Aquarium. Thanks to their docile nature, the public has the opportunity to caress them quietly, under the eyes of the experts, while paying attention to the mouth and tail. In fact, at the end of the tail they have a poisonous sting which is used in case of defense. For safety reasons, the spike is periodically severed in an absolutely painless way.
